5 Dog-friendly Destinations

2017 Expedition offers what you need to get to these pet-positive spots.

By Anne Victoria Clark

My Ford’s recent Alaskan adventure with the 2017 Expedition and sled dogs proved that some journeys are more fun with our animal friends. So we found five more dog-friendly adventures to take in your Expedition the next time Fido wants a vacation.

Carmel Valley Ranch, in Carmel, Calif.

At this scenic resort on the Monterey Peninsula, the staff understands that your pets are your family, too. That’s why they provide high-quality doggy beds for your furry pal. Enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities with your canine—even surfing. Just fold down the available PowerFold® third-row seats in the Expedition to make room for your surfboard. And don’t forget to treat your favorite beach companion to a Bacon Doggy Biscuit dessert off the in-room dining menu!

Timbers Lodge, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Pigeon Forge offers an opportunity to experience the magnificent Smoky Mountains. And the folks at Timbers Lodge offer pet-friendly accommodations so your four-legged friend can join the trek. The available voice-activated Navigation System in your Expedition with a pinch-to-zoom touchscreen can help you find all the nearby points of interest, including museums, amusement parks and hiking trails.

Spearfish Canyon Lodge, in Lead, S.D.

This accommodation is just minutes away from dozens of trails in the famous Black Hills. So you’ll want to make use of the Expedition and its best-in-class towing* to bring along your snowmobile or ATV. Or use its Navigation System to get you to legendary Mount Rushmore. Spearfish Canyon Lodge welcomes any canine sidekicks that may be joining you—except, perhaps, for your end-of-day soak in the hot tub.

The Inn at Meander Plantation, in Locust Dale, Va.

Once an 18th-century manor house, Meander Plantation is now a bed and breakfast. The place is so pet-friendly there’s a dog for an innkeeper, as well as a cat that is more likely to keep to itself. A number of private cottages on the grounds are pet-approved, so your pup will feel right at home when not exploring the trails that wind through the 80 acres. Or use Expedition’s SYNC® 3** system to connect to your smartphone’s road-trip playlist, and take your own private tour of the area’s historical sites, including dog-friendly Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s plantation.

Inn at Santa Fe, in New Mexico

Ready to test the hill start assist and available Hill Descent Control on your Expedition? When you’re at Inn at Santa Fe, you’re just a few minutes from the gorgeous red peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where the technology will come in handy. There you and your canine compadre will find plenty of outdoor adventures to tackle before you head back to the inn and relax together in the fireplace lounge. Or take a stroll through the Plaza, downtown Santa Fe’s shopping and art center, and pick out a new leash! And don’t forget to grab a free doggie treat at the front desk when you head back to your room.
