Small Wonder on the Way
Compact cars now on deck for the 3-cylinder EcoBoost®
By Adam Risman
The next step in the innovative EcoBoost® engine line—a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder—is quite a tiny package, but it means big things for increased power and efficiency in the Ford small-car lineup.
“The overall mission of the EcoBoost line is to extend the project across our entire vehicle portfolio,” says Ford powertrain manager Greg Johnson. “This engine is the natural progression of that.”
This engine, which features the lowest displacement of any motor Ford has put on the market to date, will make its debut as the premium option for consumers when it hits the streets in early 2012 under the hood of the European Focus. The baby beast has plenty of roar, saddled with 95 to 120 horsepower and 120 to 125 foot-pounds of torque,* but, according to Johnson, it will stay true to the Ford small-car feel. “This engine will bring improved fuel economy over a 4-cylinder without sacrificing the fun-to-drive aspects of the vehicle.” And that doesn’t apply just to European drivers. As part of the One Ford plan, the 1.0-liter will be a global engine, with future releases slated for North America and Asia.
